PARENTS FOR PARENTS ADVOCACY APPROACH

Parents for Parents, Inc. believes that for real, long term systemic change to happen, parents need to take the lead.  When parents advocate for their own children, they don’t stop until they make change.  Whether that’s getting your insurance company to pay for speech therapy, or getting an appropriate IEP for your child, the power of a parent’s voice is great.  Imagine the power of those voices unified for change.  Our mission is to reach parents, teach parents and unify them in a collaborative approach to advocacy.

Our advocacy approach is to support parents as they work in collaboration with other parents to talk to school systems, health care systems or the legislative system to affect change.  Our goal is to create a culture shift that allows parents, teachers, health care professionals and legislators to work collaboratively to support individuals with disabilities. Many times families just need someone to attend a meeting with them to offer support, or to offer their own experiences of solving a similar problem. Or, they need someone to help them find community resources to support their family. That is where our parent matching service comes into play.

We attend IEP meetings with families on a very selective basis.  We will attend meetings when there is an advocacy issue at stake, which is not simply an annual review.  We strongly believe in the power of each family to advocate for their child.  We take the saying, "Teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime" to heart.  Advocacy does not stop at one meeting, or at the end of your child's school career.  Our mission is to train and support families as they learn to advocate for a lifetime.
